I am so excited. I think the last time I finished a challenge or cleanse was when I went vegan back in the summer of 2010. That went really well for me… until I ended up passed out drunk in a closet after “sleep-eating” (it’s a real disorder, google it) a bucket of chicken wings. My friends found me with my hand still inside the bucket.
Chicken wings or no-I consider this challenge a HUGE success.
Day 21/Day 22- These days fell on the weekend. Do we really need to guess what I was wearing? Probably some variation of a work out t-shirt and yoga pants. My favorite uniform….mmmmmm.
Day 23- Not gonna lie, this was the first day I actually kinda hated my outfit. What possesed me to pair a t-shirt over a dress? Oh right, because I see super-skinny models in magazines doing it and think it looks cool. It doesn’t, but at least I worked with my pieces and came up with a new look. Points for creativity. My friend Amanda was very kind at dinner and didn’t say anything 😉
Day 24/Day 25- Outfit pairings you have already seen…my favorite bird tank and white shorts. I didn’t feel like reposting the pictures, but if you need a refresher click here!
Day 26- The big day! “Book of Mormon” Fan Day! My mom and I flew up to NYC, saw the show (amazing, so worth the trip) had dinner and flew back in the same day. It was such a great experience and a really nice thing for the producers of the show to do to reward their loyal fans! I wanted to be comfortable for the plane ride, but also a bit dressier so I wore the favorite blue dress. After a month with the garment I’m convinced if I were running out of a burning house I would grab Murray first, and then this dress so I’d at least look good while my house went up in flames.
*A note on the blazer above, which I bought about a week ago. This challenge was not about getting me to stop spending money on clothes, or quit shopping…it was about me buying clothes I think I would WEAR, and pieces that I could get use out of it, as well as teach me how to be more satisfied with things I already own. This blazer goes a long way towards all of those reasons I just listed. It literally goes with every.single.piece I picked for the ten-item challenge (and with the ten items I picked for July..ha!), and since it counts as “outerwear” I can combine it any way I like. I could not be more thrilled with my purchase–if you are looking for a structured white blazer that is PERF for the summer, go to Banana Republic and buy this one.
Day 27- I wore this outfit on the plane…again, something I pulled together last week, but I mostly just wanted to put up a picture of me at the Grand Canyon.
Oh hey, just me…chilling at the Grand Canyon. NBD.
Day 28- We hiked all.day.long at the Canyon. Iliterallyalmost died on the way back out. It was sublime going down, and then on the way out (in the heat of the day, no less!) it felt like climbing three million stairs…to nowhere. I had a near-religious experience when I saw the trailhead signifying we had made it to the rim. How sexy am I in my beach hat? Another ridiculous fashion choice, but since I had planned on sunning myself by the pool in Vegas/L.A. where floppy hats are acceptable…it was the only sun protection I had. A word of advice on choosing a fun color for your oh-so-chic beach hat-make sure it’s not the same tomato-ey color your face gets when you are really hot…..or sunburned….or embarassed because you are wayyy more out of shape than you had ever thought.
Day 29- On to the Vegas casinos! I chose my beloved sapphire-colored shorts and threw on the only clean semi-decent tee I had. If you are a tourist, and looking to make friends on your vacation wear a shirt that says something popular on it. You’ll get dozens of comments/compliments. People had opinions about my Dr. Seuss shirt AND the “Dancing with the Stars” tee I wore the day before. I also look really awful in most hats, but damnit I’m going to become a hat person if it’s the last thing I do.
Me: (whining) Why am I the only one that is getting I.D.ed at the table?
Blackjack Dealer: Maybe next time you come to Vegas don’t wear the Dr.Seuss shirt.
As a bonus I also wanted to show the outfit I wore that night to see “Mystere”, the original Cirque du Soleil. I am so proud that this outfit almost looks like a suit even though the pieces are from different stores. Undertank doesn’t count as an item since I usually only wear it under shirts…but I thought-it’s Vegas! Why not?!
Day 30- The last day! Another travel day for me incidentally, but my mom would have been proud to find I actually put on pants this time. I had a green dress I was using for the challenge. I wore it once for a bridal shower and then on my second attempt at wearing it the straps broke! 😦 I think I may have written this before, because I initially didn’t want to swap something else out for it as I had strict intentions of this being a ten-item ONLY challenge. I caved on the last day and threw on my favorite jeans with my beloved tribal top. It gets painfully cold in airports anyways.
So…my introspections. Would I do this challenge again? In a heartbeat, but I’d like to do it as someone who has a different place to go for all thirty/thirty-one days of the month. I was truthful and accurate in my depictions, but lets be real…I wore PJ’s for almost 1/3 of the challenge. As someone who is “funemployed” I probably don’t wear “real clothes” as much as the average gal, and so this challenge wasn’t even difficult. Still with all my boxes of clothing packed in storage I’ve learned that not only can I get by with less, but I enjoy it. It makes life so simple. Packing for my road-trip took all of twenty minutes, and my travel partners were relieved I never spent any time agonzing over an outfit. Additionally, I feel like I learned how to purchase better this month, as well as gained an inside look into how little others notice what you wear. Perhaps it is different here in the South than in NYC (where you are what you wear, bitch!) but no one really noticed I was repeating, not even my parents. Learning this, and being able to put that insecurity on the back-burner is worth it’s weight in gold.
1.) I was excited to be able to put on a new top today when I got dressed, but I still relied on my trusty shorts.
2.) I am going to attempt to make do with ten more items next month with the caveat that I will be mixing them in with two/three of my favorite pieces from last month. I feel like I didn’t get to wear the ones from June that often, and need to do so while the summer is here. I only bought the aforementioned white blazer and some pink cropped pants from BR in preparation for month two.
3.) I am most happy to report that I did not buy a THING while I was in Vegas. With all that blackjack money burning a hole in my pocket I didn’t even think to purchase a new item of clothing or some shoes, because for the first time in…well…ever, I felt like I had all that I need. I was satisfied with what I have. Do you know how liberating that is?? Mission accomplished.
Now if we could just get me into that mentality about beauty products……
